No matter what Katie Privett takes on, she pursues it with an open laugh. Privett, 22, is a senior at the University of Florida pursuing a double major in journalism and English with a penchant for the off-beat. The Palm Beach Gardens native hosts a blog dedicated to fan culture, is an affirmed science fiction fan and the founder of a sewing circle on campus.

Privett is a self-described, "fangirl," or a person fascinated with a certain show, comic or other aspect of pop culture, that usually contributes to an online community centered around that topic. But, she does not consider herself a traditional fangirl of the current show she's following, "Supernatural".

"I've always seen being a fangirl as entering a community and putting responsibilities on yourself. I don't want to be someone who goes online and says, 'I'm a fangirl," and maybe start a LiveJournal, or join a forum and then not contribute something," she said.

Privett, along with a friend who was looking for a relaxing pastime, also founded a sewing circle with about six regular members called the Super Cool Subversive Stitchers and Finer Things Society at the University of Florida.

"We just decided we are going to go as long and as intricate with a name as possible," she explained, laughing.
