finally experiencing it do they realize why
it is a community staple.
Zoo

The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo staff
shares animal stories with the public on a
daily basis. The students are passionate
about what they do, and it shows through
their enthusiastic zoo tours.
Bat

glimpse/Bats

On a plot of rural land just north of
Gainesville, there's a farm for old world
fruit bats–also known as flying foxes–
dubbed the Lubee Bat Conservancy. In
2009, the festival raised money for the
construction of a new bat house for the
University of Florida.
Zenta Gomez

Zenta Gomez, volunteer coordinator at
Gainesville's Helping Hands Clinic, has a
passion for helping those in need. The clinic
provides health care to homeless and
uninsured residents.

cleaners. It's small-town speed traps and
big city lights, and it's living history next to

Rip's Cleaners has been in business on
North Main Street since the late 1950s.
John Jennings Jr. started working there
when he was 15 years old and now owns
the business.
Morningside Nature Center

Morningside Nature Center, tucked away
in east Gainesville, is home to a recreated
Cracker farm representing Alachua County
life in 1870. The 10-acre farm puts on Living
History Days to showcase its farm animals
and demonstrate chores from blacksmiths,
bakers and farmhands.
Hairy Business

Dave Holland, owner of Hairy Business
Inc, combines cheap haircuts with live
music to cut costs and raise the volume.
The Magnolia Plantation

About 18 years ago, the Magnolia
Plantation was the first bed and breakfast
in the area to open its doors. Patrons stay
there for the close bonds with owners Cindy
and Joe Montalto, a home-cooked breakfast
and its gardens.
Bethel Gas Station

The Bethel Gas Station has been around
Gainesville since the 1920s. Now located
near the Bo Diddly Community Plaza, the
historic building is moving into the 21st
century in the form of a new cafe.
Waldo, Fla.

In a town of just 800 people, it's hard to
believe the city police department writes
close to 750 speeding tickets a month.
But Waldo, Fla., is smack dab on Highway
301, outside of Gainesville, and traffic
control is high priority. Everyone knows
you just don't speed in Waldo.
Adjunct Professor

Guy Peterson, a 1978 graduate of UF’s
architecture program, is now an adjunct
professor for the college, traveling between
his office in Sarasota, Fla., and UF.
Rape Aggression Defense

The University of Florida Police Department
offers self-defense classes not only to
students, but to faculty and members of
the community. The Rape Aggression
Defense courses teach women self-
confidence and how to escape from
threatening situations.
UF Band

The Pride of the Sunshine Marching Band
can trace its origins back to 1913, springing
from a group of 16 student musicians.
Follow the over 300 members of this year's
band, along with drum major Sarah
Rumberger, as they prepare for the 2009 homecoming show.
Black Women and their Hair

With few options in town, most black
female students in Gainesville rely on their
peers to do their hair. Take a look at UF
student Keisha Hankerson as she goes
through a weaving process common
among all races, but often kept a secret.
Lillians

Lillian's Music Store, a Gainesville bar,
switched guitar strings for whiskey shots
over 30 years ago but held onto its name.
The bar is Gainesville's oldest, and Tom
Blake, a Lillian's bartender, has seen and
written about much of the bar's history
over his 30-year span of working there.

sale benefits the Alachua County Library
District, offering a warehouse of books,
reference guides, DVDs, videos and records
for a few bucks and coins.
Improv

ArACkA, a UF all-male improv group, has
put on comedy shows since its inception
two years ago. The seven-member troupe
specializes in short-form improv.
Junior League

Gainesville's Junior League distributes
toys to local families in need during its
annual "Miracle on Main Street" giveaway.
This year's event benefited more than 300
families.
